OUR TEAM
Salt Legacy’s team has a deep passion for what they do.
They embody characteristics that align with the core values of the brand.
One of our strongest values is connection.

MEAGHAN MCDONALD (& NALU)
Founder
Although Meaghan grew up in landlocked Alberta, her connection to the sea was sparked through travel and scuba diving. As a certified Dive Master, she spent years conducting marine research and educational programs on coral reefs, witnessing firsthand the beauty, complexity, and fragility of ocean ecosystems. Those experiences inspired her to pursue studies in Marine Biology and Coastal Ecology and contribute to marine conservation initiatives around the world.
In 2018, Meaghan took a leap of faith and purchased her sailboat, Spyhop, despite having no sailing experience. What followed was a three-year liveaboard adventure filled with challenges, growth, and an ever-deepening connection to the ocean. The lessons learned at sea ultimately became the foundation for Salt Legacy—a brand inspired by sailing, conservation, sustainability, and a belief that thoughtful products can help create a lasting impact.
Alongside her every step of the way is Nalu, her furry companion whose name means "wave" in Polynesian. As Salt Legacy's official Product Durability Tester and Chief Morale Officer, Nalu can be found at the shop every day making sure our sailcloth products are ready for adventure. His primary responsibility is testing the toughness of materials (often with his paws, teeth, and endless curiosity). His secondary role is distracting the team with his undeniable cuteness and reducing productivity by at least 50%.

TAYLOR CHAPDELAINE
Creative Strategist
With roots in Fort McMurray and formal training in Media Design in Calgary, Taylor's path eventually led her west to Sooke on Vancouver Island. The move was shaped by her connection to the ocean, coastal living, and the landscapes that continue to inspire her creative work. Her experience in the marine industry has influenced the way she views community, sustainability, stewardship, and the relationship between land and sea.
What began as a creative outlet gradually evolved into Saltform—a platform that brought together environmental awareness, natural imagery, and intentional storytelling in a way that felt authentic and aligned with her values. Today, Taylor serves as the Creative Strategist behind Salt Legacy, using video, photography, and media to communicate the brand's story and connect audiences to its purpose.
Her work is grounded in authenticity and shaped by the people, values, and communities behind each project. Combining creativity with strategic thinking, Taylor develops visual narratives that not only capture attention but also build meaningful connections. Through thoughtful storytelling and compelling media, she helps bring Salt Legacy's vision to life in a way that feels genuine, impactful, and memorable.

VALERIE MESSIER
Eco-Champion: Ocean Ambassador
Val originally grew up in Quebec, Canada. Having a deep passion for the marine world pushed her to sell everything she owned to move to Vancouver Island in 2017.
She has a degree in marine biology, and is an accredited paddleboard instructor, but you can also find her in the waves along the coast surfing and kiteboarding. She is one of the few female captains in the area, driving big and small vessels for a local whale watching company. "No need to say that I have spent most of my life on the ocean."
She avidly supports a minimalist lifestyle, with everything that she owns having a specific purpose. She is currently in the design and planning stages to build her own tiny house.
Val was an easy choice to ask to represent Salt Legacy as an ocean ambassador. She has a true connection to the sea and chooses to fight and respect it at all costs. "I simply love the idea behind Salt Legacy, giving a second life to items that would otherwise end up in a landfill is truly inspiring."
Stay tuned for her full story and fun interview in up and coming Salt Legacy Speakers Series.

LOUISE SHEFFER
Sewist
After a 34 year career as an educator and principal, Louise is delighted to share her passion for sewing and design with Salt Legacy now that she is retired.
‘Mama Lou’ loves how energizing and rewarding it is to work with the team at Salt Legacy; creatively working through prototypes, designs and new project developments. She loves being part of a circular economy that creates beautiful one of a kind pieces, saving sailcloth from the landfill.
Lou’s family immigrated from the UK to Canada when she was young. She is so very grateful to live in a beautiful place where nature surrounds her. She loves to hike, bike and adventure in the outdoors with her husband and her labradoodle Henry. She feels privileged to call Victoria and Canada her home.
Her work with Salt Legacy is an amazing opportunity, a gift that gives back to her and the environment.
